I know nick originally sculpted and rendered him but he's my son now and I love him so everyone meet Harold the friendly space minor. 

And a colored version nobody asked for!!

 

as much as I hate abstract art I did enjoy doing this. it was like a little sims builder.

Module 1 Week 03 Homework

 

Hierarchy's were always something that while I thought was useful I blissfully ignored while modeling in maya. Having to use them now by force has definently taught be there usefulness even if they are moderately annoying to setup.

 

So super mario sunshine is one of my all time favorite games. and one of my favorite characters in it is this little trickster here 

I love the fact that he's clearly just some dude in disguise. It's the fun of the nintendo worlds being interconnected or the fact this guy has some reality hopping abilities to jump into another dimension either way he's a fun guy who just wants to race. 

I also Love him. 

so I had the idea of him being in disguise. I love supermario galaxy but what if Pantisimo was an alien trying to blend in and doing it badly. we've already seen the galaxy that super mario has to offer but I feel like sometimes the characters could change to reflect that. 

my first go around is with pantismo himself. I got some what captured with the excercise and started making other designs as well. 

Fludd gets a make over as well!. 

 

Now presenting Conductor bot! lab assistant extraordinaire and generic super villian lackey. Coupled with pinching hands and a non human face he absolutely provides no sympathy to any captives and prisoners in his care. 

Powered by hedron-collider his warp matter battery make him just at home in the labratory as it does in the kitchen.

Inspired vaguely by rachet and clank style utility robots I love Conductor tubes and robots that are vaguely human shaped but non empathic. so alot of sharp angles and fancy but unfriendly shapes. the robots more likely to download the plans and rush off to a secret base to hide from the heros. 

 

So I've had some experience modeling in maya. both hard surface and organic. going through the the tutorial tells me two things. 

how much of a mess that Maya's program is and how much or how little I understand of it 

while there weren't too many hiccups with actually following through with things there were some hiccups here and there. 

I couldn't seem to get the blinn that the tutorial had to the same specularity or at least the same metallic finish 

Shape exercise!

 

So shape language is something I absolutely love and adore! I love the theory of design around things and how it translate to something invocative. On the second point I love being a bit of a contrarian. the rule of "art rules matter until they don't". especially when it comes to shapes and designs in correlation with creatures and enemies. 

I don't think I was going with subversion but round shape being friendly and good and triangles being bad. seems a bit boring to me. instead of forming the body out of each I went with forming the entity to the shape kind of like keeping them in a constraint. 

First one (circle) - The gacha-ghost, a change demon that functions on pure happenstance. It loves the wild and willful souls of children but will happily give it's gifts to all. They can be found in any child casino and arcade around world. there are plenty of ways to gain a prize! you needn't use just coins. it takes, teeth, hair, fingernails, eyeballs and all manner of other fleshy sacrifice. the prizes it gives are Mostly good? so it's worth the risk. every now and than it even treats some of the unluckier kids to grab one straight from the ballpit! be careful though- you might not get that hand back~ 

Second (sqaure) - Boomer! wall man and bouncer of the universes hot most inter-planetary gay night club. friend to all and protector of many. the size of your average semi-truck and just about as strong to. He's a friendly guy who enjoys having a snooze on his break time. he takes pride in his hair..all of it. Not a fan of shapes though. 

Triangle- vespershock- the lightning dragon - Speed demon and racer extraordinaire. often found racing any flying air crafts and curling up to sleep on clouds. they love eating birds and stealing children's kites. however mischievous they might be they are for the most part, harmless. Some varieties are even friendly, often leading lost humans stuck in the woods back to the trail. they have spectacular vision and hearing. there overbite teeth act as lighting rods for any static energy they might build up. the crystals grown on them store up excess energy to be released when they hunt after prey. this energy makes them a bit...iffy around electronics. they have been used in the past as bird hunting animals and companions but can still be found in the wild.
